Why Use Our MKV to MP4 Converter?

Lossless Remux

When your MKV contains H.264 or H.265 video, streams are copied directly into the MP4 container — zero re-encoding, zero quality loss, bit-for-bit identical output.

Universal Compatibility

MP4 with H.264/AAC is the industry standard — plays natively on iPhone, Android, Smart TV, Roku, Chromecast, Windows, macOS, and every web browser.

Blazing Fast

Container remux takes 10–30 seconds for most files. Even large 4K MKV files convert quickly because no pixel-level processing occurs.

Secure & Private

All uploads use TLS 1.3 encryption. Files are processed on isolated cloud servers and permanently deleted within 1 hour. No human access, ever.

Works on Any Device

A fully browser-based interface — use it on iPhone, Android, Windows, Mac, or Linux with no app installs, browser extensions, or accounts needed.

Powered by FFmpeg

Built on FFmpeg — the open-source industry standard for video processing, trusted by VLC, YouTube, and thousands of professional applications worldwide.

When do you need to convert MKV to MP4?

MKV is great for archiving, but its limited device support means you'll often need to convert before sharing or playback.

  • Play on Smart TV or Media Player

Most Smart TVs, Roku, Fire Stick, and Chromecast devices do not support MKV. Convert to MP4 for instant playback without stuttering or errors.

  • Watch on iPhone or iPad

iOS does not support MKV natively. Convert to MP4 to open your video in the Photos app or share via AirDrop without any issues.

  • Upload to YouTube or Social Media

YouTube, TikTok, and Instagram require MP4 for reliable uploads. Convert your MKV file to avoid upload errors or processing failures.

  • Edit in Video Software

Many video editors like iMovie and some versions of Premiere have limited MKV support. MP4 works everywhere, out of the box.

MKV vs MP4 — What's the Difference?

MKV (Matroska Video) is an open-source multimedia container format developed by the Matroska project. It can hold an unlimited number of video tracks, audio tracks (including multiple language options), subtitle streams, chapter information, and even cover art — all in a single file. That flexibility makes it the preferred format for Blu-ray rips, 4K HDR archives, and multi-language media libraries. The problem? Hardware decoder support is limited. Most Smart TVs, iPhones, Android media players, and streaming services cannot play MKV natively — requiring either a dedicated app like VLC or a format conversion.

MP4 (MPEG-4 Part 14) is the globally dominant video container. It pairs H.264 or H.265 video with AAC audio and is natively supported by every device, OS, browser, and platform in common use — including iOS, Android, Windows, macOS, Smart TVs, YouTube, TikTok, Instagram, and Adobe Premiere. Converting MKV to MP4 is almost always a fast remux operation: the video and audio streams are repackaged into the new container without any pixel-by-pixel re-encoding. This means the conversion is lossless and typically completes in under 30 seconds even for large files.

The one exception is when the video codec inside the MKV is not H.264 or H.265 — for example, VP9 or AV1. In those cases, a full transcode to H.264 is required, which takes longer but is still handled automatically by our FFmpeg-powered backend.

Tips for the best MKV to MP4 results

  • Multiple audio tracks: MKV files often contain multiple audio tracks (e.g., English + French + commentary). Our converter carries the primary audio track into the MP4. Verify the output's audio before deleting your original MKV.
  • Embedded subtitles: MKV supports embedded PGS and SSA subtitle streams; MP4 does not use the same format. If you need your subtitles, extract them as an .srt or .vtt file before converting.
  • HDR and 10-bit content: For HDR10 or Dolby Vision MKV files, the HDR metadata is preserved in the MP4 output. However, playback depends on your target device's HDR support.
  • DTS audio: Some MKV files use DTS or TrueHD audio. If your MP4 player doesn't support these codecs, conversion may include an automatic transcode to AAC — normal and expected behaviour.
  • Keep your original: Always test playback on your target device before permanently deleting the source MKV file.
