How does Video to GIF conversion work?
Converting a video to an animated GIF involves two key steps: frame extraction and palette optimization. GIF is limited to 256 colors per frame, so a naive conversion from the millions of colors in a video produces a washed-out result. Our tool uses a dual-pass FFmpeg pipeline — the first pass analyzes the entire video to build a best-fit global color palette, and the second pass applies that palette with Bayer dithering to minimize color banding.
The FPS setting controls how many frames per second are sampled from your video. Higher FPS = smoother animation but larger file size. For most web GIFs, 10fps is the sweet spot — smooth enough to read clearly, small enough to load quickly.
Tips for the best GIF results
- Keep it short: GIFs work best for 2–10 second clips. Longer videos produce very large files that load slowly.
- Avoid complex backgrounds: Solid or simple backgrounds compress much better in GIF's 256-color palette than busy scenes.
- Use Medium (10fps) for most cases: It's the standard for web GIFs and offers the best balance of smoothness and file size.
